Sodium Hypochlorite (also commonly referred to as bleach) is primarily used as a disinfectant or bleaching agent, it is a yellowish liquid which possesses the very distinct smell of chlorine. Although most Sodium Hypochlorite produced throughout the world goes into the manufacture of janitorial bleaches and laundry additives, this versatile chemical is also used for various other industrial applications. In swimming pools, sodium hypochlorite is used to treat and control bacteria and algae. This product reacts with pool water to create hypochlorous acid – a weak acid but strong oxidiser which possesses excellent antimicrobial properties.
