Traffic Film Remover is a blend of an ionic and ionic surfactants blended with a chealating agent and various alkaline cleaning agents ie Sodium Hydroxide (caustic) or Sodium Metasilicate (non Caustic). Some but not all TFRs on the market also contain a wax or anti watering agent which helps to rinse the product completely from the item or vehicle being cleaned.
It is very difficult to say exactly how to dilute the product as it depends on several factors ie firstly how concentrated the neat TFR is. This can be measured using a refractometer to measure the percentage of solids in the neat liquid. Many on the market are as low as under 10% or 10 to 15% active solids. Some like Jennychem TFR ultra or TFR ultra Special are 20% and 26% respectively. Dilution rates also depend on the degree of soiling on the item being cleaned ie is there a high build up of traffic film on the vehicle. As a guide manufactures recommend with a 20 % solids TFR that you pre dilute the product 1:4 with water first and then use via pressure washing equipment with the pressure washer dial set at around 2% for average soil or perhaps 4% for heavy soil. There is often a great deal of interest in the Ph value of the product. Any good TFR will have a high Ph in its neat form. It has to be highly alkaline in order to break down Traffic Film which is highly acidic. Although in its neat form a Traffic Film Remover may have Ph of 12/13 or even 14, when it is pre diluted and then used at 2% through a pressure washer, the Ph level at the point of contact with the vehicle (the in use dilution rate) will be only 9/10.
For optimum results it is best to pre dilute as above and then apply a light coating of Traffic Film Remover all over the pre wetted vehicle to be cleaned starting from the top and working down. It is best to allow a contact time of a few minutes before rinsing all the chemical off using high pressure water. For enhanced cleaning you can agitate the TFR via a vehicle wash brush such as a Vikan vehicle wash brush. Of course if you haven’t got a pressure washer you can still wash a vehicle using TFR and a brush and bucket but remember to rinse well.
Because TFR is highly alkaline, care should be taken when using it ie gloves and goggles or glasses to protect eyes, if using TFR in a confined space eg under chassis washing it is advisavle to wear face protection to prevent splash back onto skin and a face mask to protect from inhalation. If you get TFR in a cut it will sting. Saying that many operators use TFR every day with no ill effects, you just need to be made aware of taking precautions to protect staff or oneself from potential risk.
